This is one of the oldest wine making regions in California... and no
small wonder why... the climate is perfect for growing grapes.
As as result, there are many, many terrific wineries in El Dorado county.
One of the best things about this area - is that unlike Napa, most local wineries are
family run - they don't charge you to try their wines like the bigger
corporations elsewhere. Chances are,
the person pouring your sample is a friend, relative, or the owner of the winery you
are visiting. While no charges are given, it certainly is polite to buy a
bottle or two if you like the wine.
An
additional plus for local ownership of wineries... the person who's pouring the wines tends
to be very knowledgeable about the area - so if you're visiting - they're a
good source to find out the local happenings and best places to visit.
