Garden Butterfly
This Monarch Butterfly was in our garden around the Lillies one summer morning.
Crater Lake Mirror
Seeing a boat move through the (mirrored) clouds on Crater Lake is impressive and surreal.
Pistol River
Pistol River is about a 15 minute drive north of Brookings, and an incredibly beautiful beach to visit. It has easy access from the highway, but yet feels remote. It can be quite windy here at times.
Pistol River Monolith
The rock formations at Pistol River are incredible, and their size is hard to appreciate until you get up close (such as my wife did here).
Hungarian Farm
I give credit to my wife (Agi) for this photo which she took. I love what she captured here with the feeling of discovery, the farm, and the European landscape.
Oregon Surf
Oregon's rugged coastline can make for dramatic images, even when there's no storm. This was taken just north of Brookings, Oregon.
Agate Beach Sunset
Agate Beach is on the west side of Bolinas, California. It has a wonderful tide pool area that is worth exploring at low tide. It's also a great place to watch sunsets.
Hummingbird at Trumpet Vine
I set up a chair next to the Trumpet Vine, and waited until the hummingbirds got used to me (well over an hour) so they could get close enough to take photos like this one.
Pistol River at Dawn
Got up at 5am (well before sunrise) and drove from Gold Beach over to Pistol River to take this photo. The long exposure helped smooth out the waves and give it a more mystical feel.
Lone Ranch Beach Surf
Lone Ranch Beach is just north or Brookings on the Oregon coast. Since it faces directly west, the surf is much stronger here than at Harris Beach (just to the south). This is a great beach for photos.
Drakes Bay Point Reyes
Part of Point Reyes National Seashore, Drakes Bay is protected by Point Reyes itself. Elephant Seals are common here, and the inside of the bay can be completely calm, while just on the other side of the peninsula is getting hammered by huge waves. The land in the background is all part of the park.
Filtered Sunlight
Sunlight shines through a cloud break onto cattle grazing near where we live in the Rogue Valley.
Bolinas Point and San Francisco
This was taken near the Palomarin Trailhead in Point Reyes. The image is looking south towards Bolinas, and San Francisco in the background. Numerous sailboats and fishing boats are seen here in-between.
Mendocino Headlands
Mendocino is one of my favorite places to visit... unfortunately to get there from the Rogue Valley involves a lot of driving (about seven hours), so we don't go often. However it is well worth the trip... the town of Mendocino is absolutely delightful, and the headlands are easy to hike with many areas to explore along the way.
Winter into Spring
The orchards of the Rogue Valley are already past the spring bloom stage, but the mountains above are still in winter.
Flying Fish
This Osprey has just grabbed it's next meal at Point Reyes National Seashore.
Maui on Christmas Day
For my Mom's 90th birthday, she wanted the family to spend Christmas in Maui. How could we say no to that? It was strange to be in shorts, sandals and t-shirt on Christmas though... This photo is on the south side of Lahaina, Maui.
Marshal Beach, Tomales Bay
One of the best places to go kayaking on the west coast is Tomales Bay in Marin county. The west side is a treasure as it's part of Point Reyes National Park. The beaches here are absolutely beautiful, and several are protected from the ocean winds. Go during the weekday if you can... weekends can be busy.
Summer Storm
This storm was the strongest that I could remember for any summer (usually we have only dry weather in the summer). On the weather radar, severe storms are colored red... this was purple... one level worse. It had extremely strong winds and knocked branches and trees down all over the place.
Early Morning Flight
On the way down to California to visit family, this sight was right off the highway near Yreka. They looked absolutely beautiful drifting up in the sky.
Sunset Flight
This was taken in Bolinas, California. You can see Point Reyes in the background.
Trinidad Harbor
The rock formations in Trinidad Harbor (just north of Eureka) remind me of the paintings that Roger Dean did for rock groups (i.e. Yes) in the 70's. Very surreal to see in the middle of the harbor.
Cracked Egg
Another unusual formation in Trinidad Harbor... this reminded me of a cracked egg. The harbor this day was still enough that people were taking canoes out and paddling.
Autumn meets Winter
The snow line in the lower foothills is pretty evident above the orchards in the Rogue Valley at times. This photo was taken amongst the orchards in-between Ashland and Medford.
Wave Transition
Usually the coast is too windy to see such a smooth wave as it's cresting. This day was perfectly calm - no wind whatsoever.
Autumn in Talent
I used to work for Brammo (now Cummins) in Talent. The trees around the building are largely Sugar Maples which turn an amazing red color in the fall.
Knights of the Round Table
It's almost impossible to see more than two to three hummingbirds together at the feeder... they usually fight each other off. To see seven hummingbirds at once, was unheard of. I think the cold fall weather forced them to not be so aggressive. Note that the hummingbird feeder has six holes, and there are seven of them. The one in the center was taking turns feeding from adjacent feeder holes.
Wagner Butte in Winter
Wagner Butte is part of the Siskiyou Mountains on the south side of the Rogue Valley. It's quite predominant as seen from the valley (especially where we live). If you look closely in the mid-lower left side, you can see birds circling around just above the clouds.
Clearing Fog
I love the view from the Bolinas Mesa almost more than anything in the world. It's spectacular and changing constantly. This was early morning as the fog was drifting in and out.
Sacramento Wildlife Refuge at Sunset
If you happen to be driving I-5 between Sacramento and Redding in winter, make sure you stop off at the Sacramento Wildlife Refuge... it's an amazing place during the months of December - late February. Literally millions of birds will winter here, and to see them cover the sky is awe inspiring. I was a little too late this time when I stopped by, but the setting sun and pond reflections gave a very good scene.
Spring Orchard Bloom
These are mostly Pear Orchards here, and in the beginning of April, they all bloom at once. It lasts typically only a week or two (at most). It's the most beautiful sight to see hundreds of acres of these trees in bloom.
Oriels in Love
These two were quite the pair outside our window. Very active and very noisy... they also decimated that rose later in the day.
Salt Creek Falls
Just southeast of Eugene, Oregon is Salt Creek Falls... I believe that it's the second highest waterfall in Oregon. It's a short hike down to the base of the waterfall. Make sure your camera has a very wide-angle lens as it's hard to capture everything once you're there.
Frustration...
We have several hummingbird feeders around the house, and this one tends to get hit by snow more than the others. No worries though... after taking this photo, I wiped off the snow so he could get to his food.
Farm Land in Rogue Valley
Between Ashland and Medford are Pear Orchards and Hay Farms (we're getting a few hemp farms in here too now). Spring is when everything looks absolutely perfect.
Wave Surge
Photographed near Sunset Bay. The reefs here are pretty wild.
Port Townsend, Washington
A view from the ferry leaving Port Townsend in June. It's a lovely town, with a lot of great personality... well worth the time to visit and stay to explore further.
Oregon Coast in January
A good friend and I took a trip to the southern Oregon coast to take a few photos in-between storms. The sea was quite active, and various thundershowers lurked off shore. It was an impressive event.
Odell Lake Shoreline
This is a beautiful lake in the Cascades in central Oregon. It's very popular for fishing. Nearby is the Cascade Lakes Highway and Salt Creek Falls.
Point Wilson Lighthouse (Port Townsend)
A beautiful walk early morning with my dog Taiko, saw this sunrise over the sound.
Lake Louise, Canada
Words do not do it justice as to the amazing beauty of this lake. The water is an amazing turquoise color, and the mountains tower to heights that are unimaginable.
Filtered Sunlight Rogue Valley
Spring showers can give some amazing lighting effects... this was one in the Rogue Valley.
Columbia Glacier
Columbia Glacier is amazing... the scale of the carved valley is almost beyond comprehension. To give perspective, look at the lower left side of the photo... those are full sized busses and people standing there. The glacier has retreated several miles in the last century due to warming of the climate.
Waterton Lakes National Park
Waterton Lakes National Park... The beauty of this area so impressed us... it was one of our most memorable places we visited when we traveled to Canada.
Athabasca Falls Canyon
Athasbasca Falls is an amazing place in it's own right... the canyon it carves out just south of the falls is also incredible.
Agnes Lake
Agnes Lake is a medium sized hike from Waterton Lake campground. The hike is well worth it, as the lake is extraordinarily beautiful
Mountain Peaks, Waterton Lakes NP
This was taken early in the morning (near sunrise) from the Waterton Lakes NP campground.
Red Sky at Morning...
A very vibrant sunrise in the Rogue Valley. I remember the colors of this sunrise lasting a long time, filling the landscape with all kinds of unusual colors and textures.
Waterton Lake, Canada
Waterton Lake is one place I've been to several times now, and keep wanting to return. The beauty here is profound... and every time I visit here, I want to stay longer.
Marin Headlands Fog
Fog is a common theme along the California coast... and at times, it can take an unusual shape or form, such as this time slowly filling in the valleys that face the coast. The image was fleeting, as a minute later the fog at the lower portion of the photo came in overhead, and the view was gone.
Sunrise, Bolians Bay
Summers along the California coast are typically foggy in the morning... but in the Fall and Winter, the morning can be clear, and give rise to spectacular sunrises such as here.
Siskiyou Clouds
Sometimes the colors just are other-worldly... such as this case over the Siskiyou Mountains on the south side of the Rogue Valley.
Nighttime Dreamscape
I got a new camera and wanted to try some nighttime photography. This image is of our back patio... I was expecting a few stars to show up, but I never expected the clouds moving in the way they did. It gives a dreamlike feel to the image.
Spring Shower
This was taken just outside of Talent on my way home from work one evening. Brief heavy downpours in the spring are not uncommon, this one was particularly interesting due to the soft sunset backlight behind it.
Winter Rainbow
Looking east across the Pear Orchards towards the Cascade Mountains, this rainbow was unusually bright. It frames the hill in the sunlight well. The Pear Orchards are not yet in bloom, but the buds are starting to appear..
Harris Beach Surf
The large rock (Goat Island) off Harris Beach causes the waves to sweep around both sides of it. When the waves are big enough, they can collide with each other on the back side, causing effects like you see here.
Fisherman Cape Lookout
This was taken early spring on a camping trip at Cape Lookout in northern Oregon. The trail to the end of Cape Lookout is a wonderful 2.5 mile hike (each way) with spectacular views. This photo is on the beach just below the Cape.
Spring Colors
The soft greens, yellows and reds make for an interesting combination of spring colors here in the Rogue Valley. This photo was taken near Phoenix, Oregon.
Coast near Sunset Bay
There is a beautiful hike (relatively level) along the cliffs just south of Sunset Bay State Park. The trails are not well marked, and the paths can get muddy (bring hiking boots, not tennis shoes!) after rains, but it's very well worth the effort!
Silver Falls
This waterfall is a very short walk from the parking lot at Silver Falls State Park. As an added benefit, you can walk behind the waterfall (you can see the fence just to the left of the waterfall about midway up. This photo was taken just after some heavy rains, so the waterfall was really roaring (and it was very wet behind the falls!).
Spring Colors #2
Mustard plants provide the yellow amongst the green grass near Phoenix, Oregon.
Pear Orchards near Talent
This is taken just off of Payne Road north of Talent, Oregon in early April.
Spring Fields
There's a small area just north of Talent nicknamed "Tuscany Hills" where this photo was taken. It's right off of Payne Rd, and next to the Pear Orchards. It's really beautiful in the springtime.
Storm Clouds over Orchards
Very unusual cloud formations over the orchards... This is looking southeast towards Ashland... the clouds are obscuring the Cascades at this point.
Thunderstorm Forming
Taken in early May, this was a pretty impressive thunderstorm forming just to the north of Medford.
Springtime Double Rainbow
A double rainbow forms over the Rogue Valley in early May.
Vertical Feeding
A hummingbird feeds from the garden flowers in our patio. These little guys tend to stay year round here, so during the winter, we have to make sure our feeders stay full (and don't freeze overnight).
Sunset Bay Sunset (wide view)
Sunset Bay is a fantastic place to go camping and enjoy beautiful sunsets (when the fog is not present). The bay faces directly west, but is protected by reefs at the mouth of the bay, so the water is generally very calm here.
Helsinki Harbor
Visiting friends in Helsinki, they treated us to a morning walk (in the forest behind the marina), and then for lunch at the restaurant you can see to the left. Helsinki is a beautiful city... clean, friendly, and with wonderful architecture and parks to enjoy. The people here are fantastic.
Veszprem, Hungary
Veszprem is another beautiful city in Hungary. There's a lot of history here, and this viewpoint is in the center of town, which gives an incredible view both of the town and surrounding countryside. We were here to enjoy an outdoor jazz festival, which was a lot of fun, and the weather was perfect.
Mesa View, Bolinas
Some kind person put a bench here for everyone to enjoy the spectacular view looking across the Pacific Ocean with the Marin Headlands and San Francisco in the distance.
Payne Cliffs and Foothills
A late spring view overlooking the orchards towards Payne Cliffs and Cascade foothills.
November Bolinas Sunrise #2
This was another day in late November that we were treated to a spectacular sunrise as viewed from the Bolinas Mesa.
Bolinas Fishing Boats
There is some excellent salmon fishing just off the shore of Bolinas... the lagoon can provide safe harbor for the fishing boats... however the channel to the ocean is very shallow, and can be transversed only at higher tides and smaller boats such as the ones you see here.
Rock Creek Campground
This was quite a discovery for us... Rock Creek Campground (just north of Florence) is only 1/2 mile in from the coast, and is a very beautiful place. It is a primitive campground and quite small... about 15 sites total. Well worth staying here as it's so very peaceful.
November Bolinas Sunrise #1
Probably one of the most spectacular sunrises I've seen on the coast. We had arrived the night before (late) and was sleeping in, when I caught the "sky on fire" sight out of the corner of my eye. I got dressed quickly and ran over to the cliffs to take this photo... my shoes were still untied, but I managed to get this photo.
Duxbury Reef Sunset
A very wide-angle view of Duxbury Reef in Bolinas at sunset. This was taken from above Agate Beach on top of a cliff in early July.
July Thunderstorm
A most unusual thunderstorm formed in July over the Rogue Valley... I don't know the dynamics of the cloud you see here, but there must have been incredible winds up above us to make that.
Winter Peace
The clouds were low and filtering light in every direction... you can see there's no hard shadows anywhere in this photo. It made everything seem dreamlike and peaceful.
Mt. Shasta in Winter
As luck would have it, my wife was driving at the time, so I was able to take this photo from the passenger side. The view is from the south of Mt. Shasta, and the cloud over the top almost looked like a UFO hovering (there are some legends about aliens living within Mt. Shasta).
Orchards and Payne Cliffs at Sunset
A storm was clearing out at sunset in February when this photo was taken.
Sunset Grazing
One of my favorite photos of 2018, this was taken as the smoke from a nearby wildfire was finally clearing out, and offered a gorgeous sunset. The cattle in the foreground makes it almost like a scene out of a western movie.
Sunset Rays
This was taken at Harris Beach in late February. There was a lot of mist in the air which helped define the sun's rays breaking through the clouds.
Mt Shasta from Weed, California
Mt. Shasta is always amazing to view all times of the year. Interstate 5 travels very close to the base of the mountain, and there are several places you can pull off and take some great photos of this magnificent mountain (volcano!). This was just a little north of the town Weed.
Zinfandel Grapes
Wine making is a hobby of mine, and we have some Zinfandel vines planted near our house. The clusters of grapes are extremely tight, and a very dark blue (almost black) when ripe.
Pirates Treasure?
The sun filters through Arch Rock (Harris Beach) and shines on one particular rock... it reminded me of all the pirate movies where such an event would signal where the buried treasure was located.
Winter Shower Harris Beach
Earlier in the day, it was absolutely pouring rain and you could hardly see anything... but in the afternoon the storm had passed leaving only small showers behind. This is a very wide-angle (12mm) view looking south towards Goat Island off of Harris Beach.
Goat Island (Harris Beach) at Sunrise
One thing I love about the ocean is that it can convey so many moods... this one, despite being in the middle of winter, was calm and peaceful.
Barn and Storm Approaching
Our neighbor's barn is lit up briefly by the sun before an approaching storm puts it back into darkness.
Harris Beach Walk in Storm
A couple find Harris Beach unoccupied during a storm in December.
Heavy Clouds
An unusual drop in clouds over the lower Siskiyou Mountains and near the town of Talent. I'm guessing there was hail within this system.
Marine Garden #1, Harris Beach
There are two large beaches at Harris Beach State Park, separated by smaller beaches and rocks in-between... which can be accessed only at low tides. This area is missed by most people, and is really worth exploring.
Storm Break
A high-contrast photo between brightly lit hay fields and the shadowed Siskiyou Mountains in the background.
Marine Garden #2, Harris Beach
Another view of the Marine Garden at Harris Beach which sits between the two main beaches at the state park.
Rogue Valley Spring
Spring can be absolutely delightful for landscape photography here in the Rogue Valley... everything is fresh and green.
Cape Arago
Just south of Coos Bay / Sunset Bay is Cape Arago which offers dramatic scenery. The area is great for picnics, and is popular with local surfers (on the inside of the cape). Shore Acres is also nearby, which is a wonderful botanical site to visit.
Big Creek, Sunset Bay
A view of the creek as it reaches the ocean at Sunset Bay. There are wonderful hiking trails here (of which this was take at the start of one).
Evening Spring Thunderstorm
This thunderstorm was heading towards the Cascades... a few minutes earlier, it was hailing and raining here like crazy.
Marigold Lane in Fall
A small local road just north of Phoenix, Oregon... the Siskiyou Mountains are in the background.
Cape Arago Lighthouse
This photo is looking north towards Cape Arago Lighthouse. The hiking trail we were on is accessed from Sunset Bay State Park, and it follows the cliffs down to Shore Acres. A beautiful hike indeed!
Mountain in the Sky
This alignment between tree, clouds and sun was almost unnoticed... I was working out in the field, when I happened to catch a glimpse of this out of the corner of my eye. Fortunately I had my iPhone with me and took this photo. I ran into the house to get my professional camera, but by the time I got back outside, the alignment was gone. As they say, the best camera you have is the one with you!
Rainbow's Full Arc
The lighting conditions were just about perfect here... bright sunshine... framing the tree... and high contrast with the background. An ultra-wide angle lens (15mm) was used to capture everything in this photo.
Pistol River
One of our favorite places to go... it's a photographer's dream with the huge sea stacks. It's also a great place to take our dogs to let run on the beach... it's both remote (few people) and accessible (within a few hundred feet of the costal highway). The beach is a joy to visit.
Evening Rainbow
Springtime in the Rogue Valley can have such fantastic images... this was taken near sunset looking south. If you look closely, you can see Mt. Ashland (a popular ski resort) just to the right of the rainbow.
Sunflower Detailed
My wife plants sunflowers in the garden... In summer when they're in full bloom, the patterns can be memorizing...
Summer Sunset
This is looking west across our neighbor's field... Sometimes the sunsets here can be almost unreal in the colors... it was really this bright and colorful!
Morning at Sequim Bay
On a trip to Washington this past fall, I was waiting for friends and photographed the image you see here. it's next to the John Wayne Marina in Sequim Bay. I found the place totally enthralling.
Canon Beach in Storm
Canon Beach is one of the most photographed beaches in North America. On this trip though, a full blown storm was in progress, with impressively huge waves and 60 mph winds. I had to wait almost half an hour before taking this photo... and brace hard against the winds to hold the camera steady.
Fog and Snow
We get only a few dustings of snow periodically... this was about four inches or so. I had just purchased a drone (Mavic Mini) and took this photograph as the fog was rolling in after the snow. Generally the snow melts in a day or two.
Early Morning Winter
An early morning view of the hay farmlands in the Rogue Valley in January. This particular year we were in the "Atmospheric River" path with storms arriving every two or three days... so getting a drone up was very brief.
Snow Geese in Winter
The Snow Geese tend to like open fields during their wintering here in the Rogue Valley... and fortunately the nearby hay fields provide that. This was taken during a particularly foggy day, but the diffused light helped with highlighting the geese in flight.
Kestrel Hawk
This guy was unbelievably cute to watch on our fence... bobbing his head up and down as he walked back and forth along the fence. I'm told that these are in decline in North America... so sad as they are really such fun characters to watch.
Winter's Solstice
Images of tree shadows looking straight down from a drone at Winter's solstice... Drones can give you a new perspective on things by adding in a third dimension. The tree on the left is still alive... the tree on the right passed away this last summer. The new and the old... both were magnificent trees.
Drakes Beach Wave Break
On a trip to California, we visited Drakes Beach at Point Reyes National Park. On this day, the waves were really dumping on the beach (not good for bodysurfing!). The waves were impressive in their strength, and at times would shake the ground from under you with their crash.
Dinner Interruption...
Two Anna's Hummingbirds are about to compete for food. I wish I could explain to them, there's plenty for all... but they haven't latched onto that idea unless it's really cold outside, then they will stop and feed to stay warm.
Early Morning at Port Williams
Port Williams is a small County Park near Sequim, Washington. It was amazingly quiet here, and I was (for a while) the only person on the beach.
Rogue Valley in Winter
We recently had a cold arctic air front move in which produced freezing temps and intermittent snow showers (most of which melted on the ground). I took the drone (Mavic Mini) up to take a few photos as the clouds looked interesting... but it encountered severe winds higher up, and I had to quickly return. I did get this photo though...
Sunrise at Sitges Spain
Probably the most spectacular sunrise I've ever experienced... was here in Sitges, Spain. This is an absolutely wonderful community just south of Barcelona. I was here on a business trip, and loved every minute I was here.
